vallsen

It is tough to make snow in certain places, and in a handful of locations you do wonder how people even dare to think about offering skiing opportunities. At Vallåsen, the most southerly ski resort in Sweden, the center's snow specialists perform miracles each year in terms of the conditions that prevail there. Vallåsen is situated on a ridge which is 190 meters above sea level, far south of guaranteed snow areas. It is also close to the North Sea and the warming Gulf Stream, which means the area is also exposed to warm, moist winds during the critical pre-season.

Areco the best choice

"In 2006 we realized that we needed better fan guns to make more and better snow in the conditions we have at Vallåsen," says Fredrik Hedin, MD of the Vallåsen Ski Center" It is important for us to be able to make snow that is fine and dry at marginal temperatures." We usually start snow production when the temperature is between -1 and -1.5 degrees C. In the course of a season, we therefore evaluated four different makes of fan gun, during which we really put the fan guns through their paces. When it came to making a decision, there was only one winner. Areco cannons simply make the best snow at marginal temperatures."

Future partnership important

"Obviously performance was the most important factor tipping the scale, but for us, it was also important that Areco came across as a reliable supplier," says Hedin. For instance, you do not want to have to do without spare parts.
"Areco's automatic system is good, and has operated problem free. And if we ever need help in any way, we have been given the support we need."

About Vallåsen Ski Center

Visitors to Vallåsen have a choice of 5,170 prepared runs, with the longest downhill run 1,260 m with a biggest drop of 145 m and a combined skiing area of 200,000 m2. In terms of the area that has to be covered with snow, Vallåsen has the largest system for fan gun production in northern Europe. Vallåsen currently has fourteen automatic fan guns from Areco, including seven that are tower mounted.
The water for the snow produced at Vallåsen comes partly from two of the center's own dams and also partly from a nearby river. All water is cooled in a high capacity cooling tower before being sent to the fan guns. The water is purified in threefilter stages after cooling.
